Honors 'changed ... Tennessee golf'

Dick Horton said he would need at least six hours to express all of his thoughts and feelings about The Honors Course.

The former executive director of the Tennessee Golf Association and current president of the Tennessee Golf Foundation got to the point in just under 16 minutes.

“I think that The Honors Course really changed the face of Tennessee golf when it came into being,” said Horton, now an Honors member. “Clearly, it was a magnificent golf course and it was dedicated to amateur golf and the willingness to host not just national and international championships.”

The Honors Course greatly helped golf in Tennessee, Horton said, with two invitations in the late 1980s.

“When that invitation came for the ’87 Women’s Amateur followed by the ’89 men’s championship, all of a sudden all of the best courses in Tennessee issued us invitations. Because if it was good enough to be played at The Honors Course, they wanted to be part of the same thing.

“The Honors Course changed the course of Tennessee golf in term of access to the very best courses in the state.”
