Jason Ontog has left the Baylor School tennis program to be the women’s assistant coach at Mississippi.
Ontog, a two-time TSSAA state champion at Chattanooga Christian and four-time All-Southern Conference player at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, coached the Baylor girls the past two years. He has the distinction of having been both a Times Free Press player of the year and a coach of the year.
The Lady Red Raiders were Division II state runners-up in 2007.
“I think Jason’s done a great job getting our girls’ tennis program back in the direction we want it to go,” Baylor athletic director Thad Lepcio said Thursday.
He said Ontog let him know about the move on July 4. The Ole Miss announcement came Wednesday. Ontog replaces Whitt Taber as Mark Beyers’ assistant.
“We are really excited to add Jason to our staff,” Beyers said in the Ole Miss release. “He’s a great addition for Ole Miss Lady Rebel tennis. He has such a vast amount of experience in the game of tennis and is a very well-known figure in the Southeast as far as junior tennis is concerned. He’ll be able to help our players in the technical as well as tactical areas of their game, and he will make an immediate impact in recruiting.”
Ontog was a UTC women’s assistant for a year after graduating in 2004.
“I am really proud to be associated with Ole Miss and excited to be joining the program,” he said.
Lepcio said Baylor would have an announcement soon about its tennis staff.
“Jason’s departure has allowed us to look at the entire structure of our tennis program, boys and girls together,” he said, “and we look forward to some exciting announcements in the next couple of weeks.”
