Chattanooga: Talk of the Town

“The great function of conflict is that it arouses consciousness.” — James MacGregor Burns

THE CHATTANOOGA

Serra Club installed new officers during its annual installation banquet at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. The Rev. George Schmidt, Jr., pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Serra Club chaplain, installed the new officers, said event spokesman Richard W. Buhrman, newlyelected vice president of communications.

Club members and spouses, as well as priests, brothers and nuns were in attendance, Mr. Buhrman said.

Installed as the club’s new officers were Pat Jabaley, president; Dale “Rusty” Phillips, president-elect; Sophia Bridger, vocations; Larry Parks, membership; Pauline Eberle, programs; Emily Knoch, secretary; Fos Goodwin, treasurer; and trustees Bert Shramko, Skip Nardo and Mel Downs.

“The annual installation of new officers is one of the highlights in the club’s year, which also includes an annual picnic at Camp Columbus to honor and recognize clergy,” Mr. Buhrman said. “Our bishop is always an honored guest at the picnic.”

The Chattanooga Serra Club has approximately 70 members from parishes throughout the Chattanooga Deanery and conducts activities throughout the year to encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life, he said.

“This year the club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on Sept. 13 with activities under the supervision of Pauline Eberle and Ed Warwick,” Mr. Buhrman said. “The Rev. David Choby, bishop of Nashville, will be the keynote speaker at the anniversary dinner at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.”
