Chattanooga: 51 Vanderbilt students arrested at Polk campground

OCOEE, Tenn. — A fraternity party got too rowdy at the High Country Outfitters rafting company over the weekend, and 51 Vanderbilt University students ended up in the Polk County Jail on charges of underage drinking and disorderly conduct, authorities said.

The students face an Oct. 22 county court appearance on the charges, officials said.

Members of the Sigma Chi fraternity were at a High Country campground Saturday night, and by Sunday morning the party apparently had gotten out of hand, Polk County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher Gary Verner said. Representatives from High County had told the group to quiet down, and when they did not the sheriff’s office was called, Mr. Verner said.

The students were booked into the county jail, and each was released on a $1,500 bond, Mr. Verner said. A McMinn County bonding company provided for their release, he said.

Polk County Clerk of Courts Connie Clark said arrest warrants indicated the students all were 19 or 20 years old.

High Country owner Gerald Marshall had no comment on the incident Tuesday.

Vanderbilt University spokeswoman Elizabeth Latt said school officials were notified of the charges on Sunday, and that the university and the Sigma Chi International fraternity are investigating.

“If the investigation indicates action is warranted, the chapter and individuals will be held accountable for their behavior,” she said.

Spokesman Michael Dunn said Tuesday that Sigma Chi International will be seeking information on whether the chapter was involved or if the party involved only individuals from the chapter.

“We will be working with the university to see what consequences or restrictions might take place” if the students are found guilty of the charges, Mr. Dunn said.

The fraternity has 221 chapters across the nation, he said.

An investigation into the incident and where the group obtained the alcoholic beverages also is under way, according to Polk County authorities.
