Chattanooga: Gaines will not run for reelection
Debbie Gaines, Chattanooga’s first black councilwoman, will not run for re-election this spring, leaving the District 9 seat open.
Ms. Gaines said in a prepared statement that she made a difficult decision to concentrate on current and future business ventures. But she said the choice not to run was extremely difficult because of her dedication to the city.
“Representing the citizens of District 9 and Chattanooga has been the most rewarding professional experience of my life,” said Ms. Gaines, who declined to make further comments when contacted. “I am forever grateful to all those I have had the honor to serve.”
Ms. Gaines joined the council in 2006 after winning the seat in a special election. She took over the council position of Yusuf Hakeem, who resigned to accept a job on the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole.
Ms. Gaines retired in 2005 as legislative administrator to the Hamilton County Commission. She had been a county employee since 1978.
Mayor Ron Littlefield said Friday that Ms. Gaines “will be missed.”
“I have known Debbie for years,” he said. “She has done a great job representing the residents of District 9. She has a pleasing personality.”
Linda Bennett, chairwoman of the City Council, said she knew Ms. Gaines made a tough choice.
“I appreciate her decision,” she said. “I know it wasn’t easy. I wish her well.”
