Hamilton County Commission passed a resolution today expressing disapproval of individuals camping on county property and appointing Chairman Larry Henry to take enforcement action against them.
The move, which passed 8-1, is aimed at Occupy Chattanooga, which pitched tents on the County Courthouse lawn last month.
The resolution wasn’t on this week’s agenda or mentioned in last week’s agenda session, but was passed around by County Attorney Rheubin Taylor during today’s meeting.
The resolution states that “in recent days individuals have pitched tents and otherwise set up structures/camp on the Hamilton County Courthouse lawn in an effort to have an extended stay on said property in violation of certain City of Chattanooga ordinances, Hamilton County Zoning Regulations, and the laws of the State of Tennessee.”

Great! All for getting those low lifes and ugly tents off the lawn, maybe they will actually go look for work. Oh wait, they don't like working for "the man" because capitalism is wrong and socialism is right. And since they despise the rich, i guess their relationship with their boss or their employer won't be great. I'm sure their work ethic sucks if they don't like who their working for or with. You know, maybe you protestors shouldn't bother with work and just move on over to littlefields 600k homeless shelter. Your message will be just as well received there and we won't even have to smell you or look at your ugly tents!!!! Yeah
There's an occupy Chattanooga? Who knew?
Seems like they need to Occupy a job
The occupy crowd's ignorance is understandable. They leave school with no understanding of compound interest, credit cards, adjustable rate mortgages, the stock market and why we even have a stock market much less how they could personally profit from it. Their protest are misplaced. The federal government is the culprit that caused the financial break down then required tax payers to pay for it. They passed legislation that punished the banks as discriminatory if they didn't make high risk loans to those that should not have been taking out loans. The government kept rates artificially low and without over sight insured the principle and interest for the CDSs sold to Fraudie Mac and Phony Mae. The occupiers are confused, they need to all move to 1st St. and east capital in D.C. where the real culprits are at work.
What? I thought the commission passed a resolution months ago approving camping anywhere in the city on public land. There is a spot down near the aquarium I've had my eye on for some time. Just bought my tent and was headed this weekend.
Really, why does the commission have to do anything special to remove these low life scum bags from our public property. I thought there already was laws banning this.
Sounds like they passed a Resolution to enforce the law. Pretty bright bunch, no? Odds are we taxpayers with short attention spans and shorter memories will put 'em right back in office next go 'round. They're counting on it.
Yeap....time for these fleabagging, occupoopers to go.
Most of the time, these low life morons are not even "occupying" these tents. During the day, most of them are empty. Stop coddling these idiots. Tell them they have 24 hours to pull their tents up or they are going in the dumpster. If you want to camp, go to a campground.
I'm horrified at these comments. These people, whether you agree with why they are there or not, are exercising their right to assemble. Why are all of you so supportive of reducing our rights as citizens? This protest has been incredibly peaceful and respectful. This country was founded on protest and I think it's important we realize that the ability to protest is what sets a democracy apart from every other form of government. And to those of you who say they "just need jobs" most of them do. Go talk to them and you'll find you are not as different as you may think.
So you're ok with letting "BIG MONEY" run the country, write the laws? You obviously either don't understand #Occupy,or else you're a tool of those fascists.
The 'occupiers' need to be locked up Indefinitly, no bail and no trial. That will send a clear message to anyone else who ever thinks of using their free speech. This is America! Governent is your leader and is owed by big business. You will follow and obey. If these 'protesters' keep it up, have them removed, not by the Police or National Guard, instead by their fellow citizens.
Kim Jun Ill would be proud.
Yeah, lets focus on weeding out the people who are "peacefully" protesting, using their freedom of speech, and let the real criminals run free. How about we focus on stopping the crime in Chattanooga. I guess people getting murdered every weeks isn't as important as cleaning the courthouse lawn. I guess since the crime doesn't directly affect them they don't care. I think its time to clean the occupiers of the courthouse.
Regarding previous comments, I agree, I pass by there every day and I don't see any people out there. Good! This "occupy" thing is stupid, if "occupiers" around the nation were "occupying" in the right place, they would be sitting in front of the White House lawn since the "Obama" administration is the main reason the country is in the economical mess it is. Check out the actual figures on how much the national debt has risen since he took office or the unemployment rates, before anyone tries to make an argument to that. Of course, he couldn't do it alone, the Democratic controlled Senate had a part in it too(which was also in the majority during Bush's last term if you remember).
Well, I see the loser occupiers have come out in force to post comments here. You idiots are too stupid to figure out your little tent city on the courthouse lawn hasn't done one thing to change this country, despite all the coddling the media does for you. You need to pack it up and move to Washington DC. Maybe then, you could initiate some real "change".
"We the people"...had better wake up! Dem. or Rep., rich or poor, times they are a changing. At least the occupy movement is starting conversation. I don't agree with their tactics, but it's more than sitting watching Dr. Phil. Just sayin...
These threads always crack me up!... all these people with their clever "get a job" comments! Oh and ... "go camp in a campground" you totally nailed it! GO OCCUPIERS! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST! Ohh wait... I didn't know you were killing grass... never mind that last part. HOW DARE YOU KILL GRASS! Oh and I so wanna know where you poop cause like that's totally what this is all about! I'm not going to try and debate you ppl.... I just wanted to say OCCUPY! GO! GO! GO! GO! I LOVE YOU GUYS! 99%!!!!!!! (also just fyi... I work full time, am a full time single father, and own my home!)
If you occupiers had any sense you would be demanding that the federal government shrink and be forced to return the power back to the states, counties and cities. No one in Washington hears you because you are here. By the way your mission to destroy the 1% of the wealthiest people in the country is foolish. Do you not know that if Obama confiscates all the wealth of the current 1% he will just form another group of 1 percenters and you will not get a dime of this wealth. I suggest you stop being his pawns. Also where is your outrage about Obama receiving 18 million dollars in campaign donations from Wall Street? Did you know that was by far the most any president has ever received in donations from Wall Street? Did you know Gietner came from Wall Street? Do you even know who Gietner is?
