NASHVILLE — State Comptroller Justin Wilson is questioning the process under which former Tennessee Revenue Department Reagan Farr and several of his predecessors granted multi-million tax variances to some businesses.
Wilson complains there was little documentation and a lack of a “formalized” process in the practice.
“In fact, one official described the variance process as an ‘ad hoc’ procedure,” Wilson wrote in a letter dated Tuesday to House Speaker Beth Harwell, Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey and the chairmen of the House and Senate Finance Committees.
Wilson said another Revenue Department official “gave us an example of a situation in which a taxpayer-requested variance was granted to one taxpayer but was denied to a similarly-situated taxpayer.
“The department official, while acknowledging the commissioner’s discretionary authority, expressed discomfort to us about that particular taxpayer-requested award.”
No criminal allegations were made in the letter.
