KNOXVILLE - Tailback Marlin Lane had 226 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to lead the Orange team to a 17-14 win against the White team in Tennessee's Orange and White spring game on Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium.
Lane returned the opening kickoff 43 yards and scored rushing touchdowns of 20 and 39 yards. The second score came as time expired in the first half on a draw play that was designed to simply put the Orange squad in field-goal range.
The White team, featuring quarterback Tyler Bray and the rest of the first-team offense, took its opening drive against the first-team defense for a touchdown, a 2-yard plunge by Rajion Neal. The White team also answered Lane's second score with an 11-play 70-yard drive capped by Bray's 1-yard pass to tight end Mychal Rivera.
Led by backup quarterback Justin Worley, the Orange team drove into field-goal range to answer, and Derrick Brodus was true on a 37-yard field goal.
Bray completed 14 of 26 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown. Worley was 17-of-26 passing for 143 yards. Da'Rick Rogers caught five passes for 74 yards for the White team, but his fumble in the red zone, forced by linebacker Dontavis Sapp, proved costly. White team kicker Michael Palardy also missed a 32-yard field goal.
"I was real pleased with just the competitive matchup, the competitive part of the game," Vols coach Derek Dooley said. "I thought the players played with a lot of toughness, good energy, good effort, they were into the game and it showed.
"Overall, real pleased with the spring, real pleased with the attitude the players have had and the work ethic and now we turn the page and get ready for real ball."
