Graduation

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

For those new college graduates with degrees in one of the hot job markets, congratulations. For those with degrees in something else, lots of luck. About half of recent college graduates are either unemployed or under-employed. Add to that a ton of student loan debt, and you have some starting their new post college life in the dumps. Our state and federal govt should not be indiscriminately subsidizing students and colleges in dead-end job degrees.

Attitudinally, there is something perverse about these Republican politicians who set out to peddle the kind of self serving crap that Rick Santorum was peddling to his young audience. I’m confident that it isn’t what Santorum and his colleagues are peddling to their own children.

The facts show a very clear pattern when it comes to earnings, and it’s pattern that has existed for a couple of decades now. Young adults with bachelor degrees consistently have had higher earnings than those with less education.

If Rick Santorum had the slightest interest and concern about the future of the young people in his audience, he would have been telling them like it is:

"In 2009, the median of the earnings for young adults with a bachelor's degree was $45,000, while the median was $21,000 for those without a high school diploma or its equivalent, $30,000 for those with a high school diploma or its equivalent, and $36,000 for those with an associate's degree."

If Tennessee’s Volkswagon plant is an example, it sounds like science, technology, engineering and mathematics would be good majors for young adults to consider:

“”The German automaker told The Associated Press on Monday that it is using a national print and online advertising campaign to fill specialty positions, including maintenance technicians, manufacturing engineers and logistics supervisors.

Officials stress that VW seeks to hire locally as much as possible, but the specialized experience needed for the new jobs requires casting a wider net. . . "

Gov. Bill Haslam said that although he is “disappointed” Volkswagen is looking outside Chattanooga and Tennessee, he understands why the company is doing so.

“We’ve actually had those discussions with Volkswagen and they told us they were going to advertise in those places,” Haslam told reporters. “And I think it’s a reflection of what I’ve been saying all along. We really do have to train more students” in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The governor said company officials have told him “we love being in Tennessee. Everything has been better than we expected except we really need you to produce more, qualified engineering” graduates and “other technical degrees as well.”

This means you don't have enough legit things to criticize, so you are reaching into the bucket of crazy for something to fling. It's very revealing, IMHO.

yup-just pointing out the obvious. Conservatives should acknowledge when the more extreme of their viewpoint cross lines, just as we on the left should do the same with ours. As a liberal, I found Bush's policies not to my liking, but I never questioned his legitimacy as president, nor his intentions. I found his family background in the oil business problematic, but if he crossed a legal line anywhere someone would have found it already. I think his decisions were influenced by big business and those that he kept close to him. But I suspect that George Bush was and remains a decent man who did what he thought was best for his country, made much more complicated by 9/11. I feel the same way about Obama; no president is immune to the politics that swirl around him, and every president in the product of his upbringing and education. Like Bush, Obama's presidency started with some real problems which had very complicated causes. It's not a job I would want.

Conspiracy theories and crazy crackpot ideas may be entertaining, but do nothing to bring this country forward. Our village idiots (left AND right)are getting together on the internet and finding support for their zany notions. This makes them feel that their ideas actually have merit, which they don't.

Another four years of this scumbag will rip this country apart. But apparently that is the goal of much of the Progressive elite.

Correction: the extremists on both sides will rip this country apart. You, Jon Ross, are part of that guilty group. I bid you good day, as staying here and attempting to promote reason on this site is futile.

JonRoss said: "When one lies about much of one's past life that makes one very suspect."

Sure, sure, JonRoss. We've already heard what you have to say. You “mud for hire” people are all alike. In 2000, it was all about Senator John McCain’s alleged out of wedlock black child:

“During the 2000 Republican presidential primary, Senator John McCain was the target of a whisper campaign implying that he had fathered a black child out of wedlock. (McCain's adopted daughter is a dark-skinned child from Bangladesh). Voters in South Carolina were reportedly asked, "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain if you knew that he fathered an illegitimate black child?". McCain would later lose the South Carolina primary, and the nomination, to George W. Bush.

In addition, on the week of the nomination vote, dozens of radio stations were called on the same day asking talk show hosts what they thought of McCain's fathering of a black child out of wedlock. McCain later said of the incidents:

"There were some pretty vile and hurtful things said during the South Carolina primary. It's a really nasty side of politics. We tried to ignore it and I think we shielded [our daughter] from it. It's just unfortunate that that sort of thing still exists. As you know she's Bengali, and very dark skinned. A lot of phone calls were made by people who said we should be very ashamed about her, about the color of her skin. Thousands and thousands of calls from people to voters saying, 'You know, the McCains have a black baby.' I believe that there is a special place in hell for people like those."

You know, it was the democrats in 2007 who wrote and passed this law that makes the interest rates double this year. They obviously had them double in the presidential election year. Why didn't the democrats make the law permanent? They knew that with the hatred of Bush, they were going to win the white house (though they probably thought it would be hilary). They were setting this all up to be just what it is, a campaign issue......."The interest rates are going to double, and it's the republicans that want you to pay more for your loans"!! This was all planned out by the democrats in 2007. If the democrats are now so devastated by the doubling of student loan interest rates, then why didn't they just make the rates permanent when they passed the bill? Again it's all smoke and mirrors with the democrats!

Actually, Jesse, I believe there are big differences between these two presidential candidates, and I also think today’s cartoon deserves our attention. True, the “snobbery” thing started with Rick Santorum who is not a presidential candidate anymore, but it’s become blatantly clear that the future of U.S. education along the opportunity and the ability of America’s young people to compete in a global economy is a big issue in this particular election.

Mitt Romney and his Republican cohorts have no intention of eliminating all of those tax freebies that George W. Bush gave away to America’s bankers and billionaires, which would help fund the U.S. educational system and college student loans for America’s young people. No, America’s children and young adults have nothing the Republicans want. The bankers and billionaires on the other hand have millions of dollars to contribute to the GOP campaigns.

As for Mitt Romney, his only advice to young adults who can’t afford a college education is to borrow money from their parents if they want to go school. This would fine if the parents were rich, rolling in cash, and had a Swiss bank account like Mitt Romney, but as we all know only to well middle class families in America are just barely getting by paying the basics – mortgages, utilities, gas, insurance, medical bills, and food for the table.

“The full moon at 11:34 p.m. EDT Saturday will appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than normal as it approaches slightly closer to Earth in its orbit, reaching perigee, according to NASA. The moon then will line up with the sun just one minute later.

"It is called a supermoon because this is a very noticeable alignment," Dr. James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement accompanying a new video on the topic. "The 'super' in supermoon is really just the appearance of being closer."

Okay, GWB released his college transcripts. Where are Mitt Romney's? How many other candidates running for high office over the years have refused to release their collegiate evaluations?

President Obama has not released information to the public that he deems private and personal, and there are dozens of other men who chose to do the same. Despite all, it is only indicative of the simple fact that he retains a right to determine what people have a right to know about him. And given all that has been ASSumed about him over the past few years, I don't fault the man one bit for retaining a right to as much privacy as he so desires.

He's lost nothing in keeping his personal records private. In fact, he was elected President in despite not releasing them. Look at the crap he has endured when he released his birth certificate due to public pressure by a very small minority of people. There are STILL idiots out there who STILL don't believe the man was born on U.S. soil.

Clearly, in the absence of any evidence whatsoever, people have been quite guilty of making up whatever they want in regard to him, so what the heck does he have to lose by enforcing his right to privacy?

Further, those who are demanding to know more about the man are not any who would ever cast a vote for him if their curiosity were ever sated to any sense of satisfaction, so again, what does he have to lose if he keeps you people guessing from now until doomsday?

Trust me, I've been tuning in and paying rapt attention. The funniest thing about them, is the double standards they hold the current President to. When everything fell apart under GWB's second terms, none of it was his fault. It was all the fault of the Democrats. Spin, spin, spin.

Some can hardly believe that Senator John McCain lost. Had he picked a better running mate, he probably would have won. That's neither here not there any longer.

There are too many people keenly aware of the fact that the economic status of the nation is slowly, but clearly, improving, and that has been the case since the first month after Obama took office. The truth and the facts are out there for anyone to look up. All they have to do is to look 'em up.

Despite all the misinformation being related by all those opposed to the man since his first day in office, for whatever reason they have for disliking the man, the fact remains that he has done a rather decent job as President.

Has he done a perfect job? Absolutely not. He's said so himself.

Will he be awarded a second term? You betcha. And for the next four and three quarter years, it's going to be non-stop garbage emanating from all the Obama bashers.

And I hope they keep it up from now until November. People tend to vote against negativity. It's not hard to take note of the fact that the bashers rarely present positives regarding Mitt Romney. Instead, it's all about trashing Barack Obama with innuendo, rumors, and outright lies.

It didn't work in 2008 and it's not going to work in 2012.

That Sir, is a false statement.

http://www.politifact.com/new-jersey/statements/2012/may/04/chain-email/obama-has-added-more-national-debt-previous-43-pre/

"HE'S NOT A SOCIALIST PIG!!!"

Neither is the President.

"HE DIDN'T SYSTEMATICALLY BANKRUPT THE COUNTRY ONE FAILED POLICY AT A TIME!!!"

First of all, this country is far from bankrupt. Second, I challenge you to cite any of the specific "failed policies" that you would be referring to.

"Obama's record speaks for itself, Mickey Mouse could beat Obama!"

Think so? Let's revisit this conversation this coming November 6th.

"If everybody just loves Obama so much, then why is he in a neck and neck race with what you call a lame republican candidate?"

With all due respect, I have not claimed that everybody loves Obama, nor have I sized up Mitt Romney as a "lame Republican candidate."

That aside, current polls are rather meaningless in terms of what will happen in November. Polls are only dependable if and only if, those conducting a poll are able to query a diverse range of people in the course of conducting polls. That rarely occurs.

"Why isn't Obama 20 points ahead of Romney? I'll tell you why, Because Obama's record as president for the last 3 1/2 years is a glaring disaster! He tries but he can't hide from it!"

That is strictly your opinion, and those who happen to share that same opinion. You're not unlike most other Obama bashers. Everything is the fault of Obama, simply because he is the current President. Never mind the simple fact that there is little in terms of what ails this nation today that he has had any hand in creating or causing, or that he as President can do very much about.

Among liberals, liberal leaning independents and women, Obama polls 20-30 points higher than Romney.

"and please post me a non-partisan link that says the economy is improving, if it's partisan it's worthless. and i'll post bureau of labor statistics links that will tell the truth."

First of all, the Bureau of Labor statistics are merely one of several economic indicators. But I'll roll on that one, since you brought it up.

According to the Bureau of Labor, as of April of this year, there are now more private sector jobs in the United States than there were in January 2009.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were 107,936,000 private-sector jobs in June 2009. As of June 2011, the most recent report available, the data show that the private sector total is up to 108,953,000, a net gain of 1,017,000 jobs. Source: BLS.gov - 7/10/11]

14.5% is not the "real" unemployment percentage. It is an alternative percentage, involving several factors that MAY suggest that there are people who are underemployed or who may have dropped from the workforce.

The higher percentage is based on the monthly Bureau of Labor Statistic survey, that involves a cross-section of Americans to determine their employment status. The respondents are determined as being either in the labor force, or out of it.

Those who are determined to be out of the labor force, are due to their personal declaration that they are not currently seeking employment. Many, if not most of these people have no intention of working anytime soon, because they may be full-time students, stay-at-home parents, retired or physically unable to work. Others in this category are considered "marginally attached" to the labor force. They want work, are available to work and have looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months, but by the BLS definition, they do not qualify as being in the labor force because they have not actively searched for work in the previous four weeks.

Do you begin to see the reason why the alternative measure lacks teeth? It makes for good fodder to increase the unemployment numbers for the purpose of bashing President Obama, but I remind you, that no President, no matter who he is, has a magic wand to wave to create private sector jobs.

And, given that more than a million private sector jobs have rebounded since President Obama has been in office, arguing that the man has killed jobs in America with his "failed policies" is a rather pointless and false argument, in and of itself.

I too am one of those Americans who have dropped from the employment workforce within the past 12 months. This past December, I opened a new business and am now self-employed full time, and I created three full-time positions for others as well.

Currently, in Chattanooga, the unemployment rate according to the BLS stands at 7.1%. Unemployment peaked at 9.7% in June of 2009. There is no way to refute the simple fact that around here, the unemployment picture is definitely better looking than it was three years ago.

I don't credit the President, nor do I blame him for the slow, but definite progress that has been made. The factors that collapsed this nation's economy were 16-30 years in the making. I fully understand that rebounding will take many years.

Personally, my business is off to a good start and I couldn't be more pleased with the revenue that is coming in. From where I sit, the economy is humming along at a slow, but definitely increasing pace each and every month.

Oops. . . No, I figured that was probably the case, Oz. . . I just thought I’d seize the opportunity to give the "super moon" a little PR. For sykwatchers like me, it was an awesome sight.
